crowded for her taste. "When I find Chris we'll start down toward Isadora. I think Rich is involved with some nasty stuff. He'll be back, and I don't plan to be here when he shows up. Call the sheriff and tell him what's up. Have him get some help from the next townyounger guys with bigger guns. With any luck we can bag Rich and his buddies before they cause anymore trouble."
A soft rustle at the back door reached D.J.'s ears and she froze.
"D.J.? What's happening there?"
D.J. turned toward the sound, hope and fear at war within her. The door inched open in the wind. No shadow appeared in the doorway. Nothing else moved but the breeze.
"I've got to go," she whispered. "I'll see you as soon as I can. Just don't come up here, Danny. It's too dangerous." She disconnected the line, cutting off Danny's protest in midsentence.
D.J. went to the window. Night had fallen in earnest while she was speaking on the phone. Heavy clouds shrouded the stars and moon, turning the woods into a black cavern. The wind had picked up, and she could smell electricity on the breeze. A storm was headed their waya big one, from the looks of things. She'd always hated thunderstorms. When she'd lived with Gran she would crawl into bed with the older woman until the storm passed. Once she'd lived with her father he'd put a sleeping bag on the floor next to his bed, and she'd crawled in there and pulled the blanket over her head whenever the storm became too much for her to bear alone.
